Definition & Pedagogical Concept
A weighted grade assigns differential importance to various types of classroom coursework rather than calculating a raw point sum. Instead of treating every homework problem with the same mathematical value as a semester exam question, instructors assign category weightings (for example: Homework 20%, Lab Reports 25%, Quizzes 15%, and Final Examination 40%).
Under this structure, a student who struggles with homework compliance can still demonstrate mastery of core competencies by excelling on heavily weighted unit tests. Conversely, consistent homework completion provides a defensive cushion against an isolated bad test day.
Mathematical Formula
To compute a cumulative weighted grade, each category's earned average is multiplied by its relative weight (expressed as a decimal), and the resulting products are summed:
Final Grade = Σ (Category Score × Category Weight) If the weights sum to 100%, the result is the student's exact course percentage, which is subsequently converted into an official letter grade using the school's adopted scale.
